Biography
Pete Shaw is a Senior Lecturer in Environmental Sciences and has degrees in Physics, Environmental & Ecological Sciences, and Biology. He has research interests in both aquatic environmental sciences and waste management. In aquatic environments, his research concerns primarily the influences of anthropogenic processes and actions on the quality and composition of habitat and organisms. One arm of this research addresses the interactions between nutrients and primary producers, emphasizing the roles of environmental factors, chemical form and consequent nutrient availability, and the impacts of phytoplankton on nutrient partitioning and fluxes. This work has included projects funded under the Global Nitrogen Enrichment (GaNE) project (NERC) elucidating spatial and temporal variations of dissolved organic nitrogen in chalk-fed rivers, plus contributions to the UK national research Land-Ocean Interaction (LOIS) project. Research in this area has focused on rivers, estuaries and near-shore coastal waters in the UK. Pete is also well known for his work elucidating the influences of anthropogenic pollutants (acidification) on interactions between nutrients and components of dissolved organic matter in humic lakes in northern Europe and Scandinavia.

Other research in aquatic environments has addressed the impacts of human activity on rivers with emphasis on the physical factors (channel form, riparian habitat, discharge, rehabilitation and management). This work has focused primarily on aquifer-fed systems and has been funded by the Environment Agency, Forestry Commission, and the Salmon & Trout Association as collaborative research partners. Pete also has strong interests in coastal pollution, focusing on the impacts and mitigation of pollutants derived from shipping and industrial activities, addressing the problems associated with use of tin-based antifouling paints on ships and their effects on marine molluscs, and the exposure of coastal marine environments in the Mediterranean (Libya) to oil residues.

Pete’s research interests in waste management orient around the necessity to engage individuals in waste reduction, reuse and recycling as a means to achieve desired reductions in residual waste arisings. This work (funded under the Landfill Tax initiative) aims to determine how and why householders’ perceptions and beliefs lead to their recycling behaviours. These factors are elucidated through a diagnostic and prognostic approach that combines utilization of conventional questionnaire techniques with novel applications of quantitative analysis to interpret observed patterns of recycling behaviour. In particular, Pete’s work employing quantitative behavioural benchmarks to recycling is a novel approach to gaining insight that can be applied to guide and inform strategies to enhance recycling programmes and reduce the impact of waste production.

Pete is also Chair of the Committee of Heads of Environmental Sciences (CHES) and a council member of the Institution of Environmental Sciences (IES).
