Biography
Professor Adrian Chandler is a Visiting Professor in the School of Civil Engineering & The Environment, having previously worked in the Department of Civil Engineering at The University of Hong Kong (1998-2005) and in the University of London (King’s College and University College) from 1981 to 1998.  He has published over 80 papers in international journals on topics related to earthquake engineering, and has been closely involved in 4 post-earthquake engineering field investigations.  He is a former Chairman of the U.K. Earthquake Engineering Field Investigation Team. His current research interests are in the seismic hazard assessment and structural risk assessment for regions of low to moderate seismicity, considering specifically the effects of large, distant earthquakes with extended shaking fields.

RESEARCH AND TEACHING INTERESTS
  • structural dynamics of linear and non-linear systems
  • earthquakes, earthquake engineering and earthquake-resistant design
  • earthquake ground motions and response spectra for low to moderate seismic regions
  • engineering seismology
  • earthquake damage assessment and risk/loss analysis
  • post-earthquake damage surveys
  • earthquake response of structures with asymmetric configurations
  • site (rock and soil) amplification effects in earthquake ground motions
  • earthquake design methodologies and codes of practice
  • wind effects on buildings, including extreme storm damage
