Biography
John Chaplin works on flows that are both relevant to the offshore, coastal and sustainable energy engineering industries, and are examples of intrinsically interesting fluid mechanics. There are many of these, such as the case of a horizontal cylinder submerged beneath waves with its axis parallel to the wave crests. Close study of this situation reveals some astonishingly rich physics. The wave motion drives a boundary layer that is responsible for a steady re-circulating flow around the cylinder. This can have an important effect on the loading on some floating vessels, but it is also subject to a centrifugal instability which leads to the formation of large out-of-plane secondary vortices. Similar mechanisms occur in other wave-induced motions, including the formation and growth of certain patterns of sea-bed ripples.

Following this approach since the mid-1970s, John Chaplin has made many contributions to the understanding of wave/structure interactions, including recently the provision of high quality laboratory measurements of the vortex-induced vibrations of a tension riser (see www.civil.soton.ac.uk/hydraulics/riser). These data were subsequently adopted for validation purposes by 12 international groups who are developing methods of modelling this process numerically. Other interests include violent free surface motion generated for example by breaking waves, and the hydrodynamics of marine current turbines. John Chaplin is a member of the team working on the highly innovative wavepower converter, the Anaconda (see www.bulgewave.com)
