The School of Civil Engineering and the Environment is a world-class centre for high-quality academic research in civil and environmental engineering and applied environmental science.
Our research utilises strengths in core engineering and environmental science disciplines to address real-life problems that often do not lend themselves to traditional technical investigation.
Our challenge is to apply the high standards and analytical rigour associated with our core disciplines to their solution. We aim to work with industry and other disciplines to help recognise, define, analyse and solve problems in a way that advances fundamental scientific knowledge and understanding, benefits society and protects and enhances the environment.
Our research is structured in four research divisions covering Energy and Coasts, Environment, Infrastructure, and Transportation. Increasingly, our research areas are application- rather than discipline-focused, and this is encouraged by means of interdisciplinary research centres, including growing links external to the School.
The School hosts the Centre for Environmental Sciences (CES), which carries out research under the auspices of the School's Environment research division. CES research encompasses many areas, although there is a common focus on the impacts and management of human activities on the natural environment.
We have a high level of research grant and contract income (totalling nearly £18 million for the period 2001 to 2007, inclusive), and excellent collaborative links with industry and government. In the 2008 RAE, we were ranked second in the UK, recognising the high volume of world-leading research within the School.
